Sara: AT Devices

With the discussion in class my understanding has widened. I was focused on Sara's ability to write. While others were focusing on her speech. Now, with more understanding I believe there are many tools Sara can use to help her. As mentioned in class, Sara can use a stencil for cursive. If her teacher really feels it is necessary for her to learn cursive, then this would help keep her on task. Renee's idea of use of the PECS can also help Sara improve on her communication and verbal skills. To touch more on her verbal skills, Sara can use a computer program that helps her learn new words and how to properly pronounce words she already knows and just learned. If Sara is able to see a speech therapist for a few hours through out the week that would also be a great way to help her improve her verbal skills. To improve her fine motor skills, Sara will need to see an OT a few hours a week as well. Being pulled out of the classroom an hour a day to visit with the speech therapist and the occupational therapist is much better than being pulled out of the classroom altogether.

I’m there with you! There is a speech and writing issues. The reason why I use the word issue is because there is more information that is needed. Yes, we need to identify an AT device but we can’t ignore that services may be needed as well. The Speech/Language therapist would give us an indication of her areas of strengths and weakness and work with the teacher with what strategies and AT device to use in the classroom to promote language and speech development. The Occupation therapist will assist in identifying strengths and weaknesses and work with the teacher in providing the best activity and AT device for Sara to increase her fine motor skills.
Lastly, the writing issues seems to prevent her from expressing herself, so by providing an AT, where she can continue to progress forward would strengthen sentence structure, she may have difficulty speaking but doesn’t’ mean that she can’t work on grammar. The text to speech would provide her the opportunity to provide meaningful presentations and additional language development.
Now don’t get me wrong, Speech/Language and an Occupation therapist is needed to improve her speech and fine motor skills. But remember the child is able to do more, so let’s us provide that opportunity
